Whole30 – Day 1

We started making preparations for Whole30 on Sunday.  This is the basket that usually holds all of the bread in the house.

The cabinet used to hold all of the pasta, rice, crackers, etc.

The first thing we made was homemade breakfast sausage for the week.

We also roasted some sweet potatoes.

So, this was it – Day 1.  Dane and I both stepped on the scale first thing in the morning but we won’t weigh again until the end of the 30 days.  According to the Whole30 program, you’re supposed to eat your first meal within an hour of being awake.  I have an hour commute, so I don’t usually have much spare time unless I get up super early.  Dane agreed to get up early to start cooking while I got ready for work.

Eggs scrambled with peppers, onions, mushrooms and broccoli.  Roasted sweet potatoes, homemade breakfast sausage, strawberries and blueberries.  I also had a cup of coffee with coconut milk.

I’m definitely not used to eating a big meal so early.  I typically have something small and eat again when I get to work.  This was delicious, though.  Neither one of us felt deprived, although Dane did mention that an english muffin with jelly would have been nice.  :)

I brought a salad to work with me for lunch.

Spinach, spring mix, tomatoes, cucumbers, roasted sweet potatoes, hard boiled egg and steak.  I used Garlic Gold Meyer Lemon Vinaigrette.

Dane had an evening softball game and I went to the gym after work.  To make things easy, Dane put a roast in the crock pot.  He used a can of tomato sauce, a can of water, celery, carrots and parsnips.

I had mine with some brussels sprouts, broccoli and sweet potato with coconut butter.

We made it through the first day!  I definitely missed having sweetener in my coffee and some kind of snack right around 2:00pm.  Dane said that was also the time he started thinking about food.  I thought I would struggle more with not eating something every couple of hours like I normally do but it was OK.  The big breakfast first thing in the morning kept me satisfied all the way until lunch and my salad was very filling as well.  Of course one of the biggest challenges of working in an office is avoiding the never ending supply of goodies that mysteriously shows up in the break room.  Yesterday it was frosted Krispy Kreme donuts.

I can already tell that Dane and I doing this together is going to make things much easier.

Day 1 down – 29 to go!
