Santa Hustle 5k

When I registered for this race a couple of months ago, my plan was to be done with Couch to 5k and ready to run.  Then I found out I had to have surgery and thought I was going to miss it completely.  Last week I decided I felt good enough to walk it.

On Saturday afternoon, Kim and I went to the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach to pick up our packets.

The race bibs were so festive!

The race shirts were long sleeved Dri-Fit.  Super cute but a tank top would’ve been more appropriate.

My friend Jen drove to Daytona from Tampa with her husband and 2 daughters.  She was going to be running the half marathon along with my friend Morgan.  All of us got together for a pre-race dinner on Saturday night.

That might be the most unflattering picture of me, ever. I’m burning that top.

This morning I woke up early and had a cup of coffee along with a waffle with almond butter and banana.  After I ate, I got dressed and tried out the hat and beard that came in our race packets.

Super cute, but there was no way I was going to be able to wear that during the race, even if I was walking.

Kim picked me up at 7:45 and we headed toward the Ocean Center.  There were a lot of festive decorations and a beautiful tree.

We found Jen and her family right away and Morgan arrived shortly after.

This was Morgan’s first half marathon but judging by the distances that she runs, I knew she’d do great.  She looked super cute, too.

I also ran into our friend Rich who was running the 5k.

We also met up with our friend Tina who was going to walk the 5k with Kim and me.

The half marathoners started at 9:00 and the 5k started at 9:30.  The entire race was on the beach!  Normally there is a really nice breeze coming off of the ocean but not this morning.  It was HOT!  Especially after we turned around and headed into the sun.  I felt really bad for Jen and Morgan who were running the half marathon.

I was surprised at how many people actually wore the long sleeved shirts and the hats.  Tina was smart and wore a tank top.

It was an out and back, so we got to see Rich kicking butt.

Right around the half way mark, they had a cookie and candy station set up.  M&M’s and a cookie?  Yes, please!

After we finished, we went inside to cool off and get our complimentary beer.

Then we went back near the finish to wait for Jen and Morgan and cheer for all of the other half marathon finishers.  At one point, the finish line started deflating!

They had it fixed within a few minutes and then we saw Morgan!

She ended up finishing in 2:16:25 and 6th in her age group!  Not too shabby for her first half marathon.  :)

Then we saw Jen!

Jen thought the heat and running on the beach was brutal!  I heard so many people complain about the heat.

I ended up running the final .1 of the 5k just to see how it felt and it went well.  I didn’t feel any pain!  I’m hoping I’ll be able to start running again (slowly) this week.  I miss early morning runs with my running buddy.

Thank you so much to Kim and Tina for walking with me and congrats to Morgan and Jen for kicking butt!!

It’s so strange for me to see people dressed in Santa gear in shorts, short-sleeves and capris running on the beach!

I’m glad you did it. Congrats~!

It’s also weird to be sweating your butt off wearing Santa gear. :) I’m originally from Chicago, so it definitely doesn’t feel like Christmas when it’s 80 degrees.

  1. [...] I had my post op appointment with my doctor yesterday afternoon.  He said I’m healing great and I should be good to go to resume any kind of activity.  He was actually impressed when I told him I walked a 5k on Sunday. [...]
