I can’t keep packages of granola bars, nuts, crackers, etc. at my desk at work. Regardless of whether or not I’m hungry, I will obsess about them.
I think a lot of my overeating has taken place when I was bored and not necessarily hungry. Here are some tips to stop eating out of boredom.
- Drink water. I always have a bottle of water at my desk. Try drinking 10-12 ounces to see if that does the trick. You might be surprised.
- Call, e-mail, text or Tweet someone. Chances are, if you tell someone that you’re thinking about food but not really hungry, they’ll be able to knock some sense into you.
- Gum. I always try to keep gum in my purse or desk drawer, because 9 times out of 10, this satisfies my “hunger.” Especially if I’m craving something sweet.
- Move. Deliver something to another floor or on the opposite end of your building. Take a quick trip up and down the stairs. I always feel better when I can step away from my computer for awhile, plus you get a few more steps in for the day.
Yesterday
I woke up early yesterday, so I would have time to make some eggs for breakfast. I used 2 egg whites, onions, mushroom and spinach but only ended up eating half of that on a sandwich thin.
My mid morning snack was yogurt, 2 tbsp granola and strawberries.
Lunch was another yummy veggie bowl.
After lunch, I had an unpictured pack of peanut butter crackers for 180 calories. <—– Note to self – avoid vending machine.
I also had a banana a little later in the day.
I had a quick dinner before heading to Dane’s softball game. I made 2 fish tacos using 1 tilapia fillet and 2 Extreme Wellness tortillas. (74 calories each)
I also had some leftover quinoa and black beans.
The clouds were rolling in on the way to Dane’s game. When I was stopped at a light, I thought it was interesting that all of these birds were hanging out on the power lines. I’ve never seen them there before.
I ended up hanging out in the dugout for most of the game because the rain was on and off.
Dane was awesome and set up my treadmill yesterday, so I wanted to give it a try. It’s different than what I’m used to but I’m sure I will get more and more comfortable with it in time. I set my laptop up in front of it, but the treadmill was so loud that I couldn’t hear it. Does anyone else have this problem?
Maybe I will see if my earbud chord will reach next time. That’s the only solution I can come up with.
Goal – 1200 calories
Food – 1320 calories
Exercise – 129 calories
Total calories – 1191 calories
Do you have a treadmill at home? Do you watch TV or movies from your laptop or iPad?

I have a Kindle Fire and I use my ear buds when I walk on the treadmill and watch a movie. I usually just read while I’m on there. Makes the time go by so fast. Hope you are enjoying yours! Nina
I haven’t attempted reading yet..I’m quite the klutz, so I’m worried I’ll get distracted and fall off!
The treadmill at the gym has a jack for headphones, I never really thought about it, but those machines are really loud. Maybe you can get wireless headphones for at home?
I can’t keep snacks at my desk either. I will not rest until they are completely eaten. I love your tips for combating boredom/hunger. I’m going to try them out!

Right..I’ve plugged into the ones at the gym before, but this one doesn’t have that option. I’m going to see if my earbud chord will reach tonight.
Because I am so busy, I don’t “think” I eat because I’m bored. I think I eat because I am so busy and I don’t know if I’ll get a chance later. It makes intuitive eating difficult and is something I need to work on!
I watch TV or DVD (on a TV) while running on my treadmill. I have to really crank up the volume!

Ear phones are a must – or else all I hear are my feet pounding – no fun! I really want to try your roasted veggie bowls next week!

Exactly..definitely don’t want to hear my feet or my breathing for that matter.
You should definitely try it..I love them!
I have had to lock my cabinets at work that have my food in them just to keep me from mindless snacking. I know, but I’m getting better!
